2010 AACA SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS

2010 RECIPIENTS

The  Alaska Air Carriers Association Awards Five

2009 Forrest Jones Memorial Scholarships

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Coty Mayo (Fairbanks), Bret Byron Bohn (Anchorage), Hayden Julliard (Anchorage), Seth Wunrow-Brushafer (Sitka) and Branden Forst (Sitka) exemplify the attitude and commitment which the Forrest Jones Memorial Scholarship seeks to perpetuate in Alaska aviation. Each were awarded a $1000 scholarship for 2009, and individual write ups follow on this webpage.
The AACA scholarship memorializes Forrest Jones, who made a significant contribution to aviation in the State of Alaska during his forty years supporting aircraft. He was a dedicated aviation maintenance professional and role model who combined innovative thinking and a common-sense approach to everyday problems.  His maintenance philosophy of “fixing it right, by the book” was combined with a high degree of professionalism and integrity.
COTY MAYO (FAIRBANKS)
Coty Mayo has been passionately interested in aviation since childhood.  His fascination started with the construction and design of model airplanes.  Coty is a senior this year, but has already completed several college courses. “I have known Coty for over 10 years, and his passion for aviation has been a driving force all of this time,”  says Mary Ver Hoef.
Coty will be attending the University of Alaska Fairbanks, majoring in aviation maintenance, while he continues to pursue his flight training. Coty has been successfully growing and marketing fresh produce to local restaurants, and selling at the Farmer’s Market.  Proceeds from his efforts are paying for his flight lessons.  During the summer, Coty also works as a counselor at Wild Rose Summer Camp, a quality art and nature study outdoor camp in Fairbanks. He designs and implements programs in art studies, games, nature walks, and other group activities. Coty volunteers at Calypso Farm and Ecology Center, a local nonprofit organization which focuses on community outreach through farming.  In winter, Coty works as a stage hand for the adult Fairbanks Symphony Orchestra. In addition, Coty has studied classical violin for the past nine years, and performs with the Fairbanks Youth Symphony.  He also successfully auditioned and played with the ASAA All-State Orchestra in Anchorage, joining a group of selected musicians from throughout the State of Alaska.
SETH WUNROW-BRUSHAFER (SITKA)
Seth Wunrow-Brushafer, who will graduate from Sitka High School in May 2009, has always wanted to be a pilot. He started flight lessons at 10 years of age!  “I have always known that Seth wanted to be a pilot,” says family friend Mary Trow. “It’s all that he’s ever talked about doing.” Recently, Seth had the opportunity to fly for six days in Arizona, landing at over a dozen airports and landing strips, and experiencing his first mountain flying. He plans to obtain his commercial and flight instructor ratings, and pursue his college degree at the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks. Seth attended flight school at Rare Aircraft in Minnesota, completing ground school and flight training. He worked locally for Harris Aircraft Services, picking up as much information as he could from the pilots and mechanics.  “I rank Seth in the top 10% of all employees I have supervised,” wrote his Harris Aircraft supervisor, Mark Hackett. ”His personal initiative and ambition is impressive.”
BRET BYRON BOHN (ANCHORAGE)
Bret Byron Bohn, a life-long Alaskan, is attending the UAA where he is enrolled in the ATC Air Traffic Control program.
Prior to his college studies, Bret graduated from West High School and was a member of the National Honor Society.  Bret became an Eagle Scout in 2005, earning 60 merit badges, including all aviation-related badges. “Bret’s character and his consistent track record of success and achievement reveal a standout student with a high potential for success”, says Assistant Professor Don Rearden. “Bret isn’t just another student doing his time at our college; he’s a role model for his peers.”
HAYDEN JULLIARD (ANCHORAGE)
Ever since he was a young child, Hayden Julliard has dreamed of flying.  He shared that dream and his goals for an aviation career with the Alaska Air Carriers Association.  Hayden’s hard work and achievements are being honored by the award of the 2009 Forrest Jones Memorial Scholarship.
Hayden has taken flying lessons and completed ground school.  In addition he took the initiative to complete a mentorship with Evergreen Helicopters  this past year.  In addition to his chosen vocation, Hayden balances academics, extra curricular activities, community involvement, and working half time.
BRANDEN FORST (SITKA)
Once again, the Alaska Air Carriers Association is awarding the Forrest Jones Memorial Scholarship to Branden Forst of Sitka. Branden, a 2008 Sitka High School graduate, was also awarded the 2008 scholarship. He has been attending the California Maritime Academy in Vallejo, California, where he is combining marine and aviation studies with flight lessons. Branden is building a firm foundation to achieve his dream of becoming an Alaska State Trooper Fish and Wildlife pilot. Branden will return to Alaska this fall to continue his education at the University of Alaska—Anchorage and will be enrolled in their Professional Pilot Program.
The Alaska Air Carriers Association scholarship committee commends Branden for his demonstrated character, self-motivation and the good grades he worked to receive.  Dan Langbauer, Branden’s math teacher for four years at Sitka High School wrote, “First and foremost, he is a quality human being. Branden never has a bad thing to say about anyone, is very positive, and always has a smile for people. Though he is very soft spoken, people respect him as a leader. Branden has distinguished himself as one of the top trumpet players both locally and throughout the state. The thing that separates Branden from many of his peers is his work ethic. Branden knows what it means to work, and there are many times when he is in school before 6:30am to get extra help on math, physics, or practice a particularly difficult music piece.” Branden’s father, Rich Forst, has his pilot’s license and flies the family Aviat Husky on floats throughout Southeast Alaska.  Rich has taken the time to teach Branden “everything from how to tie a plane down to how the different instruments work.”  Branden says, “When I was seven, I remember sitting in the cockpit of an Alaska Airlines 737-400 in awe of all the switches and instruments around me.” Branden obviously has a vision, works with purpose, and achieves his goals.  In 2008 through the U.S. Coast Guard, Branden became a licensed U.S. Merchant Marine Officer and Master of steam or motor vessels of not more than 100 gross tons.  In addition, he is a state-certified Emergency Trauma Technician and a certified PADI Rescue Diver.
