UPDATED LOCATION! The event will be in the South Terminal, not the North.

This two‑day, in‑person workshop—conducted in coordination with the National Transportation Safety Board’s (NTSB) Transportation Disaster Assistance (TDA) Division—provides air carriers with practical, in‑depth training on family assistance operations following a serious aviation accident.

The workshop focuses on the organizational, leadership, and coordination responsibilities of air carriers during an accident response, with particular emphasis on compliance with federal family assistance legislation, effective engagement with affected families, and coordination with the NTSB and other response partners. Sessions are led by NTSB family assistance and emergency operations professionals, with additional perspectives from state and humanitarian response partners.

Over two full days, participants will receive a comprehensive overview of the NTSB’s role following an aviation accident, including its independent investigative authority and responsibilities related to family assistance. The training addresses the legal, operational, and humanitarian obligations of air carriers, as well as the importance of preparedness, internal planning, and executive‑level decision‑making during high‑consequence events.

See the agenda.

Agenda topics include:

  • The NTSB’s mission, structure, and role following aviation accidents
  • Federal family assistance legislation and air carrier responsibilities
  • Family assistance operations and the fundamental concerns of family members
  • Notification of involvement and victim accounting
  • Medicolegal aspects of family assistance operations
  • Information sharing, resources, and coordination with partner organizations
  • Supporting employees and internal stakeholders during an accident response
  • Communication with family members and conducting family briefings
  • Management of personal effects
  • Site visits, memorials, anniversaries, and long‑term considerations
  • Case studies and lessons learned from past events

This workshop is intended for senior leaders, executives, managers, and operational staff who may be involved in organizational decision‑making, response coordination, or oversight during or following a serious aviation accident.

Each day consists of a full 8‑hour session, with a mix of presentations, facilitated discussions, and case‑based learning.
